On Dynamic Soaring

Gliders can fly for long times and long distances in vertical wind as encountered near ridges (orographic lift), in thermals, and in lee waves. However, by flying certain trajectories gliders can extract energy to support flight also in air with no vertical wind component as long as the wind varies in strength or direction. This opens up the possibility to fly for example in high-altitude jet streams and hurricanes. The presentation gives an overview of some analytical results such as bounds on energy gains, a number of numerical results including optimized trajectories in jet streams and hurricanes, and finally some particulars about the "JetStreamer", a high-altitude jet stream soaring aircraft that is presently being built at Lehigh.
Professor Grenestedt received his Ph.D. in 1992 from KTH, Sweden. In 2000 he joined the faculty of Lehigh University where he founded the Lehigh Composites Lab. His focus is on designing, building and operating advanced vehicles, including stealth boats, landspeed racers, and aircraft.
